Science - Intent Statement 

At Wren Park we aim to provide memorable and fun opportunities for children to develop their understanding of the world around them and to build an awareness of how Science directly relates to their everyday life. We use engaging and practical contexts to encourage children to experiment, discover, wonder and observe. Science fosters a healthy curiosity about the universe around us as well as promoting a respect for world around us and provides opportunities for the critical evaluation of evidence through observation and investigation.  

Following the National Curriculum allows us to deliver broad, balanced and sequential learning, though opportunities are seized to extend and develop our learning in line with the needs, questions and interests of our children. At Wren Park our lessons are carefully planned to promote scientific thinking, curiosity and wonder, independent investigative skills and to extend and develop their scientific vocabulary in a range of contexts. Lessons are planned to be practical, thought provoking and relevant with the children encouraged to explore, record and report their findings. Wherever possible, we link Science learning into our termly topics and into real-world contexts. 

Derby is an area well known for its engineering and industry and we aim to encourage a greater appreciation for STEM subjects. Living in an area of industry and engineering helps us to promote the significance of STEM subjects and helps us recognise the importance of inspiring both girls and boys to engage in a lifelong love of STEM subjects.  

At Wren Park we believe all children are scientists and our Science curriculum strives to help children discover the awe and wonder of everything around them. We aim to provide our children with the confidence and motivation needed to further develop their skills for life in the primary classroom and beyond.
